Chapter 1311: The Rise
The system’s reboot couldn’t undo the damage already inflicted on the Sentinel Tower. As the northernmost defense node of the Highland Kingdom, it had borne the brunt of the enemy’s relentless assaults. Over time, the tower accumulated too many structural failures and malfunctions. Once those faults crossed a critical threshold, even if the protective barrier reactivated, the tower had already entered an irreversible path toward destruction.
Under the horrified gaze of countless soldiers on the battlefield, the towering sentinel—standing proud for centuries and long believed unshakable—collapsed completely today. The tower’s fall triggered a chain reaction that ultimately shattered the entire defensive line.
The heavy energy shield vanished. The aberrations surged forward like a tidal wave. The only thing left standing before the Highland Kingdom was a forest barrier, burning fiercely in flames. The battle-worn guardian trees and the exhausted mortal armies began to fall back in layers.
From high above, the land looked like a scorched hellscape. The black-and-red tide swept over the once-magnificent walls, now extinguished. Massive monsters moved across the rugged, cratered battlefield as if it were flat ground. The forest’s edge was consumed by fire. Polluted energy beams and missiles screamed down onto the mortal troops below. Towering guardian trees rose up bravely to confront the enemies emerging from the wasteland, but they were overwhelmed within moments by the tenfold numbers of the “tide.” The knights tried to flank and cut off part of the enemy, but the fearless aberrations and stone-hard “behemoths” stood like walls, unyielding to every charge—
The mortal army retreated. The northern border of the Highland Kingdom fell swiftly. Though the breach in the barrier was only one, its width exceeded what the army could hold. In the valley near the western side of the Blue Rock Hills, the main force of aberrations had already penetrated the forest. The road to the kingdom’s heartland lay before them. This southern human realm fought desperately, but compared to the monsters’ lightning advance, the Highland Kingdom’s reserves simply couldn’t keep up.
“Your Majesty…” A temple mentor looked toward the dais at the hall’s center, eyes wide with fear as they met the silver queen’s somber face. “The tower has been destroyed… the surface forces can’t hold that breach…”
“I see it,” Belsethia said in a low voice. The Starfall Temple trembled around her. The ancient mechanical soul within her nervous system emitted a hoarse growl. The fortress struggled to rotate and withstand the surface fire, all its systems rapidly approaching their limits. “The enemy’s main force is moving toward that gap… and their commanders behind them have sharp reflexes and battlefield instincts.”
“Your Majesty…” A minister stepped forward hesitantly, then gritted his teeth and spoke firmly. “The Highland Kingdom is lost. Once the forest barrier is pierced, no one can stop the flood of monsters. We must recall the surface legions and fall back south of the Homecoming Bridge. That’s our only chance to regroup…”
Belsethia said nothing. Another minister nearby shot a sharp glance at his colleague. “We’d be abandoning centuries-old allies on the battlefield—something the Silver Empire has never done in its ten-thousand-year history!”
“I take full responsibility for my decision,” the first minister declared loudly. “I will go to the surface and fight with the rear guard. But the other forces and the Starfall Temple must withdraw south of the Homecoming Bridge. It’s the only rational choice!”
“That’s your decision, Lord Kronan, not mine. Don’t be so quick to claim ‘responsibility,’” Belsethia’s voice suddenly rang out from the throne, silencing the hall’s disputes instantly. She sat upright on her pale-gold throne, her gaze slowly sweeping over everyone present before settling on the massive holographic projection of the frontline. She stared long and hard at the scenes displayed, as if weighing a terrible calculation. After a long moment, she narrowed her eyes slightly and tapped her throne’s armrest with her fingers.
The next second, the grand astrologer Virania, standing nearby, suddenly heard a distorted synthetic voice echo through the hall: “All subsystem control privileges have been transferred to the Elven Court. Remote control subsystems are shutting down in sequence…”
Many in the hall were momentarily stunned. Only Virania, who knew the ancient fortress best, reacted first. She looked at Belsethia in alarm. “Your Majesty, what are you doing?!”
“The Highland Kingdom’s defense line cannot be abandoned. If we hand over this resource-rich civilized territory, those monsters will grow stronger in no time and spread rapidly across the Loren Continent. Retreating south of the Homecoming Bridge is like being trapped on an island. Even if the bridge holds temporarily, those monsters will eventually cross the strait and set foot on our lands,” the Silver Queen’s gaze swept the hall with iron resolve. “We cannot give them any chance to establish strategic depth or footholds—no matter the cost, we must trap them in the wasteland!”
Her words stunned the elves into silence. For a moment, no one dared speak. Belsethia then began issuing further orders: “Lord Kronan, arrange for all combat personnel in the temple to board escape vessels or warhawks and evacuate the Starfall Temple within an hour. Then proceed to the forest line and continue fighting on the ground. Master Virania, lead the civilian officials and non-combatants to the temple’s rear Quiet Garden. That’s the main separation module. I will send you directly to the Elven Court, where Valendian will meet you. Inform him of the frontline situation, then use the Elven Court’s backup systems to take control of the Sentinel Tower—quickly mobilize the reserves; the frontline needs your support.”
Another violent explosion rocked the fortress from an unknown source. The entire Starfall Temple tilted sharply, nearly toppling everyone. As the temple struggled to regain balance, a temple mentor finally shouted out: “Your Majesty, you can’t use the Starfall Temple to block—Your Majesty! This is impossible! This can’t be!”
The other elves finally reacted, their shock at the queen’s astonishing decision quickly turning to opposition and doubt. The Starfall Temple held a special place in the hearts of the Silver Elves, a symbol of the empire for thousands of years. The hall erupted in chaos. Even the most devoted ministers pleaded with their sovereign in fear.
Yet amid the turmoil, only Virania’s voice remained calm. Though she had been shocked moments before, she was now composed. “Then, Your Majesty, what will you do yourself?”
“I will evacuate as well—I must take responsibility,” Belsethia said calmly. “The throne itself has an escape structure, but if I want the temple to land precisely where planned, I must maintain control here until the last moment. You all must leave first so I can focus on the final operations. Afterward, I will pilot the escape device to land within the Highland Kingdom. The recovery will be up to you.”
Virania studied the Silver Queen’s eyes quietly. After a long pause, she nodded slowly in acceptance. Minister Kronan stepped forward, his aged frame trembling slightly as he stared at Belsethia on the throne. His lips moved for a long time before he finally spoke: “Your Majesty, the Starfall Temple… is the foundation of the empire…”
Belsethia met the old minister’s gaze. All eyes in the hall fixed on her. The noise gradually faded, leaving only the distant rumble outside and the strained mechanical hum deep within the temple.
After a long silence, the Silver Queen’s voice finally rang out, striking every heart: “The foundation of the empire is not the Starfall Temple. The foundation of the empire is every Silver Elf.”
She heard a low murmur deep within her nervous system, the faint tremors of ancient logic units and mechanical chambers. The temple’s soul seemed to sigh softly. Though she could not fully understand the ancient machine’s voice, in that deep, hoarse rumble, a part of her own soul suddenly felt lighter.
Since taking this throne centuries ago, listening to the temple’s growing anguish day by day, this was the first time she had felt such relief.
“Execute the evacuation plan. This is the Silver Queen’s order,” she lifted her head, her voice as commanding and unyielding as ever in the court. “Time is short. The Highland Kingdom’s border legions won’t hold much longer.”
No one questioned her now. The elves swiftly began carrying out Belsethia’s orders. Evacuation commands spread to every corner of the fortress. The elves grabbed their supplies and weapons, rushing toward the nearest gathering points.
The ancient relics, exquisite decorations, noble poems, and the deep chambers filled with countless secrets and memories were all left behind, soon to be consumed by flames along with this living fossil of a temple.
The command hall quickly emptied and fell silent. Grant Astrologer Virania was the last to approach the throne. “Your Majesty, please—”
“I will take care of myself,” Belsethia interrupted with a smile before Virania could finish. She glanced at her personal attendant, Ilian, who had stood silently like a shadow since earlier. “Ilian, you’ll come with me…”
“I’ll stay and help you,” Ilian smiled gently, shaking her head. “Controlling the temple alone won’t be easy. You need someone by your side to assist and watch over things.”
Belsethia immediately shook her head. “No, I don’t need—”
“You’ve never been apart from me since childhood. I know exactly what you need most at critical moments,” Ilian interrupted unusually. Then she glanced at the wide throne. “Or is it that this escape device only has room for one?”
“…Not exactly,” Belsethia sighed helplessly, conceding. “Fine, you stay. Master Virania, you may leave now.”
Virania gave a long, meaningful look at the queen and her attendant before turning and exiting the hall.
The forest was ablaze, the flames spreading like wildfire, while monstrous shadows surged like a tide against the defensive lines.
Then, suddenly, a strange buzzing sound echoed from the sky—so abrupt and unnatural that some of the soldiers stationed behind the front lines couldn’t help but look up.
To their shock and confusion, the Starfall Sanctuary, which had just moments ago turned and accelerated to retreat from the battlefield, was now slowing down. Countless magical airships and battle giant eagles swarmed out from the towering ancient fortress like a hive of bees released from their nest. Their dense buzzing filled the sky as they streamed downward in vast swarms, darkening the heavens like an ominous cloud.
Aboard those departing ships and eagles were fully armed Silver Elves, their faces set with grim determination.
The mutated creatures advancing on the ground noticed the change above. Under the command of their leaders, they began firing dense volleys of luminous projectiles skyward. The airships and giant eagles from the Starfall Sanctuary responded with fierce counterattacks, scattering swiftly across the forest.
Then, a thunderous roar came from the rear of the Sanctuary. A structure roughly one-tenth the size of the main fortress detached itself, wrapped in a radiant magical glow, and sped toward the Silver Empire’s territory.
After this bewildering sequence, the Starfall Sanctuary resumed accelerating—but not toward the safe retreat route.
Instead, it turned sharply, gaining speed high above, heading straight for the far end of the forest’s defensive line—toward the massive breach in the Grant Wall. As it advanced, it unleashed its remaining might upon the land below, raining fire from the sky and sweeping lightning across the front.
Like a dying giant making one last, desperate strike against its foes, it hurled its spear and sword in a final, defiant assault.
Inside the command hall, the shrill alarms had been forcibly silenced by Belsethia. The sounds of devices overloading and self-destructing echoed relentlessly. Intercepting fire from the ground was denser than ever—black-red beams and crackling lightning streaked across the external monitors. Yet, to the Silver Queen, these terrifying attacks seemed laughably insignificant.
The fiercer the enemy’s fire, the more frantic their commanders became. That only proved her decision was right.
The Silver Empire was ancient—just as old as the Starfall Sanctuary. Many believed this fading empire, like its crumbling “symbol,” was a hollow shell: radiant on the surface but weak within.
But few understood that the forest never truly decays. It only rises again, renewed and reborn, after every blaze and every thunderstrike.
The Starfall Sanctuary was destined for a solemn, epic finale. The Silver Empire needed a resolute, legendary rebirth.
By the throne, the handmaiden Ilian stood quietly. As the distant horizon tilted along the Sanctuary’s rail, revealing the dark, corrupted wasteland beyond, she bent her head slightly and whispered, “Your Majesty… is it worth it?”
“We are an ancient civilization,” the Silver Queen replied calmly. “The burden of a great nation.”
